Peter just hit snooze again. For the fourth time. He thinks he should better get up now, but can’t. His eyes are so sleepy. ‘I am not ready’, he thinks. ‘If I only had one more hour to sleep.’
Peter turns off the airplane mode of his phone.
Brr brr … . The first notifications come in. 8 new messages on WhatsApp. A friend invites him over to his birthday. His mom checks in on him whether he is eating well enough. 10 new emails. A customer complaints about the latest product update. 6 new Facebook notifications. He scrolls down his news feed. ‘Oh wow … Gaby is in Israel. I wish I would be there with her. Fuck … who is this guy next to her.’ He quickly scrolls further as his anger starts making him upset.
Brr brr … Google now notifies Peter that he is already running late for his first meeting. ‘Did I just spend …ah wasted … 30 minutes on Facebook? Holy cow … I really need to stop doing this.’ Peter thinks. He feels like having another hangover — not from drinking, but from notifications.
Brr brr … Google Now really wants Peter to leave now. ‘I should better get dressed’, but Peter knows it’s just an early meeting with a friend and accepts being late a few minutes late — just to have some more time for himself. Because he doesn’t want to get up and face another morning and day in front of him. A day of struggles, challenges, overwhelm, and busyness.
Organize your life and manage yourself
Cut back the overwhelm in your life. Cut back the fucking feeling of sleepiness. Cut back the feeling of disbelieve. The feeling of uncertainty because it’s where stress comes from.
Don’t just go on like Peter hoping that your future will be better. Don’t just work your ass off and putting in more hours. That’s like putting more fuel into a fire IF YOU don’t look at and solve the underlying problems.
The problem underneath is not having a proven system to your work approach. A system that guides and relieves you from daily pressure.
You might be using an operating auto-pilot right now: Getting up, watching at your notifications on your phone and instantly feeling rushed to do things. Answering your first emails while you brush your teeth. Feeling pressure and guilty not to make enough progress and not to accomplish enough. If you feel like Peter, you might feel like a marionette — as if someone else is controlling your life.
It doesn’t need to be like this if you focus on managing your energy, instead of ONLY focusing on managing your time. We’re not machines. Hence, we should stop managing time but focus on managing our energy.
Emphasize energy over time
I think there are four life (entrepreneurial) skills that we need to master
- To be focused (doing the right things; being effective)
- To be productive (doing things right; being efficient)
- To be mindful
- To be creative
These skills are certainly not learned over night. Some need pain, lots of pain, maybe a breakdown or burnout to realize that they can’t go on like Peter and need to work on managing their energy better.
YOU define the speed of adoption for yourself, and it’s neither good nor bad to do it really quickly and slowly. For me, the most important part is that you trust yourself along the process. Trust in better organizing your life, becoming more productive and focused. As a result, you’ll enjoy your work life much more and feel less overwhelmed!
Make it a goal to manage your energy.
Trust in the best practices and principles and trust yourself that you will tweak them to make them FIT your schedule and values because there is NO one solution for everyone. Yes — there are principles (ex Pareto, Parkinson), and different systems (ex. GTD, Pomodoro technique), but don’t expect all them to work for you. Make an effort to find the one that works for you.
Make it your goal to find a system to organize your life and manage yourself.
Use systems, not goals
As I believe more in systems and processes over goals, I invite you to stay open and try to unlearn what society, our parents, professors, bosses or colleagues told or showed us what it means to be hard working.
Don’t compare yourself. Don’t be someone else.
I invite you to try to find your rhythm, your habits that fit YOU well instead of imitating someone else. Because what works for him or her might not work for you.
That’s why I will be presenting different recipes for productivity to you and show you how you can test and tweak them to arrive at one that fits YOU. It’s work. Lots of work but I promise you will build great life skills to organize your life and manage yourself. I believe it’s one of the greatest skills you can develop…and if you deliberately practice them, everything else in life will follow.
Everything that you wish, hope and aim for, will follow because you are focused on ONE thing and productively working in a mindful manner.
This in itself is a great goal. To accomplish peace of mind to be less overwhelmed, be in charge of your life again and so be fulfilled, content and happy because you know that you are in control!
On top of it, like life and success has proven to so many before you, if you achieve these states of being — financial success, health, love, relationships will automatically come your way in a good way.
It might sound contradictory that by not focusing on these things, they will enter your life. If you are less concerned about being happy, you are already happier. If you are less concerned about chasing the money, you will do good financially. If you solve problems for others and help them, you’ll get financial success because money is just an exchange for value. And by helping others and solving their problems, you provide massive value!
AND you better help others and provide massive value when you follow an operating system and workflows that make you focused and productive.
To do so, you need to better know yourself. Know what your values are. Know what motivates you. Know what you what to achieve. If this is aligned, you won’t create internal conflicts anymore. These internal conflicts often stop you from moving forward or feeling fulfilled.
To reconcile. Just by organizing your life better and managing your energy instead of ONLY time, you will achieve greater peace of mind. Be more fulfilled and content. And on TOP, life will serve you in a way that you will be rich in health, relationships, love, respect — and money.
Because let’s admit it. A stable recurring income is important. But so is health and a peace of mind. You can have both plus fun and love in your life. You don’t need to be a one-dimensional douchebag who only works his ass off.
I invite you to think about your life in the following: it’s not this OR that. Why not to think: this AND that. Don’t create polarity. Don’t think black and white. Don’t limit yourself to either this or that.
You can have both IF you want!
Build a business — and have a good life by managing your energy and time.
